Who is CYF? & what do CYF work?

CYF, Children and Youth Development Foundation, has been working on Thai education in remote communities for 17 years. Our vision is to enhance the educational opportunities, to enhance the quality of children and youth, and to establish forceful communities.

In 2019, CYF creates our school named ‘CYF Learning Center’. It is located in Nakhon Phanom province, the northeast part of Thailand, the border areas near Laos and Vietnam. The aim of the school is to create learning innovation for the ASEAN exchange area and to be a learning center that designs learning styles for individuals in secondary education. Now, there are 15 students who stay in school and 3 local students.

CYF believes in the power and potential of the new generation. We facilitate the learning area of trust and sufficient freedom to let students search and experiment with their real aptitude and interest. If they are really interested in something, they will passionate to learn by themselves that is the most important skill and then other necessary 21st Century skills will come out. The teacher has to facilitate and empower students engaging the head, heart and hands ‘whole person’ and concerning ‘real-world’ issues that provide the opportunity of education for sustainability learning.

Location and duration

Ban Tha Kho, Tha Kho Sub-district, Mueang district, Nakhon Phanom province, the northeast part of Thailand.

Volunteers can choose to volunteer for periods ranging from 1 month to 5 months in second semester 2019 (November 2019 to March 2020)

Accommodation and Wi-Fi

Volunteers are accommodated in a small wooden house in the area of the school. You should expect to share the house with one volunteer of the same gender. The house is equipped with fan, table, thin futon mat, blanket, pillow, and mosquito net and has a shared bathroom.

The school has an audiovisual room that volunteers are able to use during set hours of the day. You can also purchase a local SIM card with data for an unlocked mobile phone to access the internet.

The school approximately 10 kilometers outside of central Nakhon Phanom. A bicycle will be provided so you can ride along the Mekong River and get into the city for about 20 minutes.

Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Three meals are prepared by the students and will often include fresh vegetables, eggs, fish or meat, cooked with fresh herbs and spices, and served with plenty of rice. Vegetarian and fish options will be available and we will try to use the most organic vegetables as possible from the farm. All meals will be shared and eaten in the communal kitchen.

Weekends and travel

Volunteers have the weekends free.

Volunteers can fill their free time with students or spend your private time alone with coffee shops, local markets, taking the slow boat to travel in Laos, or simply exploring parts of Nakhon Phanom.

The city of Nakhon Phanom sits right on the bank of the Mekong River, directly across from the city of Tha Kaek in Laos. At the riverfront has a wide promenade and a bicycle lane on the banks of the Mekong while the other side of the road is lined with several temples and other historic places.
